Protest on Affirmative Action
I found a news blog by 2 guys self decribed as rich, white and from Texas. This post tells of a protest for bringing attention to how bad whites have it in the North central part of Dallas. I think the area is Highland Park.
This group of concerned white students had a bake sale where prices are determined by race. Blacks pay the least and whites the most. It is well established that products cost more in poor black areas and are often times of lower quality.
In defence of the white folk, just think how frighten they must be to know Affirmative Action is meant to level the playing field. That Black and Hispanics are trying to get ourselves together and live the American dream. The build in advantages their fathers and grandfathers enjoyed are still there but now to a lesser degree. What if some of the disadvantaged students are smarter, nicer, work harder and appreciate the opportunity more?
All we really want is a chance? Do not be intimidated ,racists. There is enough to go around. Check out the link, you will love it.

Acknowledging our differences is constructive and helpful but what this stunt lacked was any respect for those differences. It was blatantly disrespectful, not because it happened but because it was not realistic.
Had the same group held the same bake sale providing the costs in the opposite manner, $1 for hispanics, 50 cents for blacks, and 25 cents for whites - it could have been an awesome opportunity to promote the reality of economics when it comes to inner cities with high minority populations.
It was an opportunity lost. It’s a shame.

well put Doug,the intent was for these students to pretend they are victimized by Affirmative Action.

Highland Park is an incorporated city with its own schools that sits well inside the Dallas city limits. Adjacent to the SMU campus, it lies just a few minutes from downtown Dallas. This is where the “old money” of Dallas resides.
Highland Park kids are definitely rich kids, but all whites are not rich and poor whites still outnumber poor African Americans and poor Hispanic Americans, who are only “disporportionately” poor. Until the past decade, there were more poor whites than poor African Americans and Hispanic Americans combined, but immigration has made things about 50-50.
There is no link between affirmative action and economic status. Affirmative action benefits primarily go to minority students from middle and upper middle class households. If economic status was what counted, we could do away with race-based affirmative action and shift to income-based affirmative action. This wouldn’t work because lower-income white and lower-income Asian students outscore lower-income African American and Hispanics students. Economic-based affirmative action would increase white and Asian enrollment at the expense of African Americans and Hispanics.
There is no longer a link between past racial injustices and affirmative action. Now that Hispanic Americans have become the nation’s largest minority, affirmative action is based on “diversity.” What counts is whether your group if under or over represented on campus. This cuts down on the number of Asian students whose superior academic performance makes them over represented on many campuses.
Affirmative action bake sales are intended to dramatize the inequity of college-based admissions (whites and Asians have to score higher than African Americans and Hispanic American to gain admission), but they have become old hat. It surprizing tht anyone pays attention to them.

Blair, you have a lot of truth in what you say, I will add the benefits Affirmative Action may go to middle or upper class minorities, but their class may be the result of 2 good jobs and not networth.No where in your response did you say diversity was bad or that we should not embrace it. If that means privillaged races have to score higher that us minorities in order to be admitted, so be it.
