Black Business Person, white spouse, help or hurt
This summer will mark the 40th year anniversay of the end of anti miscegenation laws.In the 1950’s Richard and Mildred Loving moved to Virginia from Washington, DC where they had married. Mr Loving, a white man and Mrs Loving a black women were sentenced to 1 year in prison. They sued the state and in 1967 the supreme court ruled the ban on Interracial marriage violated the 14th admendment of equal protection.
Fast forward to 2007 the ban on gay marriage is being lumped into a comparision to interracial marriage. As I recall, the only problem with interracial dating and marriage was when it involved black and white mates. Many interracial couples are angered at the comparsion They could feel as the Governor of California felt when he said,”Gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.” Look it up!
This being the 40th year of legal marriage between black and white couples, it still is a problem for some people. I have seen a high performing biracial male career come to a halt when he married a white woman. This gentleman, was half black and half white and perhaps identified with his white genes more so than the black ones. Neverless the powers to be saw him as a black man dating and now married to a white woman. I know of another case, where a half white and half black man was engaged to a white woman. The white woman’s grandmother was on her death bed and had one request for her grandaughter. “What ever you do, please do not marry that n-word.” Think about it, not stay happy, healthy, work hard, stay out of jail or any other dying request. Heavy.
I think the interracial love affair, particularly when it is black and white can be and most likely will be a business problem for the lovers. I have witness this in my own family, where my brother is a super star salesman but his employers have given him a hard time. I hope to get some feed back on this. Dose it hurt for a black business person to have a white spouse? Should gay marriage be compared to interracial marriage? Please see the link below to find out more.

Well, Jim, you did it agian…hot button issues. Unfortunately there are people out there who will try and make it hard for anyone to succeed regardless of color, who they are married to, and so forth. To say that a person will NEVER succeed because of the spousal choices would suggest that one might be using it as a crutch. There are employers out there who could care less about the color of your skin or who your spouse is…keep looking!
Comparing gay marriage to inter-racial marriage is like comparing apples and oranges. They are two completely different issues.
I will be inerested in seeing what others have to say about this:-)

Madena, thanks for the insight, I hope you are getting beyound the racism that has been a part of our American past. I agree on the gay marriage and interracial marriage being like apples and oranges. I have interest in other comments as well.

You bring up a great issue in our society. I was reading up on this yesterday. I am engaged to a Korean woman and I was looking for info. I think problems with interracial relationships are case by case. But you better believe that there WILL be problems. I am not complaining at all because I CAN marry outside of my race. The only people that matter are the two people in the relationship. The personality of your spouse has more influence on your success than race ever could. Great post Jim

I assume you are not Korean, I wish you all the best of love and happiness. Your comment tells the story and perhaps in todays times we have made some progress to where the personality of the spouse is the most important aspect influence

Blog discussing interracial dating issues and relationships in today’s world.
Are you in a same-race relationship and are cheating on your spouse interracially

I am half-Korean half-West Indian. My husband is half Italian half-Cuban. Our children: a whole lot of everything!
Let’s face it, marriage is hard. It takes work. Loving someone sharing your lives and bringing together two people is a difficult thing. Bring four different cultures to the table and you just increase the intensity. (Oh by the way my husband and I also have a 20 year age difference). But if you love each other you find a way to make it work. Despite what people think about your relationship. I am used to the stares as those are the same stares I’ve got all my life as a member of a mixed family. The cultural differences DO show up and we openly discuss them all the way.
Does it affect you at work? If you are happy — who cares? I’m sure people comment about our marriage behind our backs, but we support and love one another and I know we are stronger and better together than apart, so outside opinions really aren’t considered for us.
Gotta agree though: I fail to see how interracial marriage is the same as gay marriage.

cheaters are cheaters it doesn’t matter about which race they are cheating on their spouse with and which race asian, black, white they are. Its a psychological issue in my opinion, the people who are so eager to cheat with a different race just show that they have this hidden lust in them thats not fullfilled, and they dont have a enough strong will to stay faithful

while there are differences between a gay marriage and an interracial marriage, after all a gay marriage can also be interracial, the issue ultimately boils down to society dictating by law whom we can or cannot marry, if that choice is not covered under freedom of association then there is no basis for family protections within the constitution. yet those protections are there and should be and should also extend to all citizens equally, ideally all people. this being said, i think “marriage” should be defined as a religious term and for the purposes of taxation and all governmental aspects of that type of relationship it should be called a civil union.

bwright, deep comment and there is a lot to think about.I live in a community, Oak Park, IL, that allows civil unions,as the gov of California said, gay marriage should be between a man and a woman! My attempt at humor, you made a great point and thanks for commenting
