jena 6, update
I read a tremendous post yesterday by Invisible Woman. It is a reminder to us all we have a long way to go. She has a profound photo of Klansmen grinning and a Blackman with a noose around his neck. This was the vicious symbol used by the racist in Jena, 3 nooses hung from a tree, a method of intimidation meant to keep us in our place. The white students attacked black students. This abuse lead to a white student getting his ass kicked, and has been further highlighted by 6 arrests. The arrests are all black students; the charges including attempted murder have caused a rally of protest. Protest voices have been heard and some charges have been reduced. I urge you to look at this you tube video for this shocking story details. As Don King would say only in America!

Jim - I try not to get angry, but the story of Jena6, the injustice, the all white jury, the ludicrous prison sentences, the apathy of of most Americans - need I go on? - just sent me over the top. I thought I was having an embolism.
I signed the petition that was/has been sent to the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and invited my communities to do the same.
Yes, the sentences were reduced, however, instead of life, they only have to serve 20+ years.
Where’s the outrage from our country for this debacle? We all get our panties in a wad when someone mistreats an animal, yet we sit on our hands when it comes to the lives and well being of men.
Sometimes I feel ashamed that I live in the land of ‘liberty and justice for all’.
I have to stop because I think I’m about to puke.

We must establish a national system and scrutinize these judges more closely. If our politicians will be serious at the annual Black Caucas weekend instead of partying, create a national data base where we can be informed and instructed on a plan of action, that would be a start.

Louisiana is practing Jim Crow laws openly. The rest of the south,and America for the most part are doing the same. Our prison system is proof of that.

America has been called the land of opportunity, which I firmly believe it still is. People need to quit blaming eveyone else for their problems. Life is not FAIR PERIOD. Please use all your energy and effort to better yourself, go to college, start a business, do something productive. There are lots of grants and FREE money for people who try to get them.PLEASE QUIT BLAMING OTHER PEOPLE FOR YOUR OWN PROBLEMS!!!!!!!

I was hoping that by now, we’d all have come to our senses and realized the insanity of the Jena 6 was/is a travesty of the legal system.
I thought that in this day and age we’d all have grown-up and that our humanity would have blossomed and we’d put our differences behind us.
I wished that the ‘righteous’ people of America would have descended on the town of Jena - in letters, petitions, emails, in person - so as to halt the madness.
I was sure that our Presidential candidates would seize the opportunity, to show their solidarity and compassion with the Jena 6. One could only imagine the mileage they would have gotten out of their involvement and seeing this through to a positive end.
I was wrong.
