You Can Be Great!

Have you ever thought, I can’t be a business success because I am black? We all have to wonder what the landscape would be like if racism was not part of our culture. Have you ever been told, you can do it, you can be great? I am here to tell you just that. If by chance there is no one to tell you, you can be great, tell your self. This morning I came across a story on Tom Burrell, the founder of the largest Advertising firm owned by an African American.
Mr. Burrell is a tall slim man with an easy smile. He is black. He is also legality blind. Please visit the link below for this inspiring story.
Success In Blindness

I believe that by just being a part of “Priscilla Palmer’s Personal Development list” obligates each of us to also post this list. You like me (Killeris at “Attitude, the Ultimate Power”) are on this list. If you have already posted it, THANK YOU. If you have not posted it, I am officially putting out a challenge that you add additional sites that fit the theme and post it. This is my opinion only. If you disagree I respectfully understand. If you do agree with me this list can be found at: http://mondaymorningpower.blogspot.com/2007/09/personal-development-list-challenge.html

Mel, I will get down with it. Thanks for the link, I am challenged by software, if it is easy I will find a way. How did you like the viedo, if you did not watch, you missed something special. The man is black but his example is unversial

I have not ever thought I could not be a success in business because I was black, but just this morning with my self-esteem and self-confidence low, and my worry high…I wondered if I could be a success with my little side business, I wondered how would I make it? With a 9-5 that I still have to work? With low finances to get it all going, administrative, and other issues-how will I make it work? I figured every person who has decided to open their own business questions themselves from time-to-time, and includes the “am I crazy” speech with the regular “I don’t how this is all going to work out” statement.

Thank you for reminding that I can and I will be great all by myself. I haven’t been told this (in regards to my business) but I really appreciate this reminder and this post.

Styleosophy, we all wonder and experience self doubt, we must stay focused on the things that contribute to success. Yes there are superstars, but most of us are ordinary and have to overcome self doubt

Hi. I’ve stopped by to read Jim’s wonderful blog many times since we first met. Although I’ve never shaken the man’s hand, I feel that I know him well; his observations always seem to hit the bullseye of the subject on which he turns his attention. I’s like to offer a twist, however on this entry.
Start with this idea firmly anchored in your mind: I AM GREAT. I AM HERE FOR A REASON. THAT RESON IS TO (fill-in with your own words what the job’s outcome should be). I’VE CHOSEN (fill-in the company’s name ) TO BUILD MY CAREER ON THE FOUNDATION OF MY EXPERIENCE (fill-in with a personal story that specifically highlights the character of the corporation and skills required of the job. Tell him/her a true story about your life ) I’VE LIVED MY LIFE, AS BEST I COULD BASED ON THAT ONE SMALL STORY I’VE JUST TOLD YOU. [Look him/her in the eye; stare ] MANY PEOPLE MAY ASK YOU FOR A JOB. MANY PEOPLE HAVE A WEEK’S WORTH OF INTERVIEWS, AND YOUR FIRM FALLS INTO THAT SCHEDULE. NOT ME. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE I WANT TO BE ( now you need 3 pieces of info, all easily got from the internet; 1. a recent quote from the CEO that you admire-use his name, the context, and the date on which he said it; 2. a quote from anyone who does the job your trying to get; 3. I like this product]…BECAUSE (points one, two and three from above.) PAY, BENEFITS, VACATIONDAYS DON’T MATTER TO ME–IT’S NOT WHERE I’D BE TOMORROW THAT CONCERNS ME. IT’S WHERE I’LL BE THAT I’M MOST INTERESTED IN. OH, I’M BLACK, DOES THAT MATTER?
Could you really get away with that? You bet! I hired people for years on Wall St.
The interview is about confidence demonstrated by your manner, which is polite and FIRM. It’s also about work ethic; you did your homework on the company and could spout it from memory. It’s about the boss looking at you and wishing(!!??) he/she had the guts to do what you just did. Most Exec’s care very deeply how you would represent the firm. The style I show gives them a first-hand testiment to that. Content, your homework, and style win jobs. Interviews are DISQUALIFIERS. Conversations about how a product made bt the firm are one of many simple ways to earn jobs. People overhearing this converasation at the company will talk about you when you’ve gone. More than once, my employees stuck their heads in my door to say, “I hope you hired that guy/gal.” BLUE CHIP hires are hard to find; Jim will tell you. Good luck!
